African Spiritual Practice and Origins of the Zombie
Apeike Umolu joins Dr Mzilikazi Koné and Dr Liz Grumbach for the University of Arizona’s Zombie History, a show that unearths buried narratives.
Koné and Grumbach lead the panel in a discussion of the role that African spiritual practices play in resisting zombification. This first episode of Zombie History aims to understand the relationship between zombification and the psychological effects of enslavement and colonisation on the African mind. By considering this relationship, the conversation will explore whether African spirituality and consciousness-based liberation theories such as Biko’s Black Consciousness and Blyden’s African personality provided solutions to counter the effects of enslavement on the mental state of the ‘then-colonised’, and the repercussions of such ideas today among the Pan-African Community.
